Rabobank Stadium

On September 7, 2012, the first downs of football were played in the newest addition to the Salinas Sports Complex Rabobank Stadium. It was an exciting finale to a complex, challenging, and fast-paced development project. The completed project is truly a gem on the Central Coast, a 5,000 seat stadium with the bells and whistles — field houses concessions, video scoreboard, announcer’s booth, and an NCAA regulation synthetic turf field. From our perspective though, what’s really amazing is what you can’t see above the ground – the infrastructure and construction of the “Miracle Stadium” are truly awe-inspiring.

The stadium’s playing field is eleven feet below natural grade, and drainage was the foremost concern in the planning process. Preliminary work by Landset Engineers, Inc. included topographic mapping of the project site, followed by a Design Level Soil Engineering Investigation and Percolation Testing. The soil work was critical, as it specified design criteria for huge retaining walls and the large infiltration systems that would handle the site’s storm water runoff. Landset’s next phase of work was development of the site Improvement Plans, including grading, drainage (with Low Impact Design criteria), retaining walls, erosion control, and site utilities. The team spent significant time in the design of two large subsurface storm water infiltration systems; they lie beneath the playing field sidelines and their performance is critical to maintaining the quality of the turf surface.

Landset’s team continued to be involved throughout the project’s construction, with services including permit procurement, the development and implementation of the site SWPPP, construction staking, geotechnical testing and grading oversight, submittal management and approval, and project closeout. Every member of our staff played a role in the stadium project, making it a true team effort, and one of Landset’s flagship projects. We are very pleased to have played a role in the completion of the Central Coast’s premiere youth sporting venues. For additional information, visit www.salinassportscomplex.com/rabobank-stadium.

Tatum’s Garden

Tatum’s Garden is a unique and special place in our very own community of Salinas, California. Spearheaded by Shawn and Amanda Bakker, Tatum’s Garden is a fully-accessible park and playground for all children. Inspired by their daughter Tatum and a visit to an all-inclusive playground in Pocatello, Idaho, the Bakker’s were motivated to create a community playground that would allow all children to play side-by-side, whether they were able-bodied or had special needs. Their vision and tireless dedication resulted in a remarkable outpouring of support from the community, with donations of time, money, and professional services. Landset Engineers, Inc. is thrilled to have been a part of this extraordinary project; one that has truly impacted the lives of children in Salinas, and is a crowning achievement for the community.

Landset’s involvement began with project planning, and continued throughout construction. The Civil Engineering design team, led by our very own Guy Giraudo, used the project Site Plan and incorporated a number of Low Impact Design principles to effectively reduce and treat runoff from the park. The biofiltration basins and bioswale have been incorporated into the landscape design seamlessly, resulting in a functional, environmentally friendly, yet aesthetically pleasing development. Landset’s additional contributions to the project included a design-level Soil Engineering Investigation, Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan preparation and implementation, geotechnical/soil testing, and construction staking.
